Open Access Week @ City Tech Library

Using Open Educational Materials in Your Courses

Tuesday, October 25, 2011
3:30-5:00pm
Rm A543, City Tech Library (Atrium Building), City Tech

High-quality open access curricular materials are increasingly available online, and can provide an alternative to traditionally-published, high-priced textbooks. In this workshop we’ll discuss strategies for incorporating freely-available open access and public domain resources into your courses. Bring your syllabus or assignment and we will work together to add resources to your course website on Blackboard, the City Tech OpenLab, or other online platforms.

Coffee & cookies will be served.

Open Access Happy Hour: Your Rights as an Author

Wednesday, October 26, 2011
5:30-7:00pm
Rm A632, Faculty Lounge (Atrium Building), City Tech

You know what you write, but do you know your rights? Copyright is a bundle of rights that apply to work you produce in any medium. How can you choose a publisher and negotiate your contracts to make the most of your rights as a scholar, researcher, author, and creator? Come enjoy wine & cheese with your colleagues and learn how to preserve your rights to reproduce, distribute, and display the work you create.

RSVP: Prof. Maura Smale, msmale@citytech.cuny.edu

Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions

Today’s Chronicle of Higher Ed reports that 22 colleges and universities across the country have banded together to form the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (Coapi). From the Chronicle article:

“The goal is to provide more practical advice and ideas for refining and expanding policies on our individual campuses but also to leverage those policies into action,” said Lorraine Haricombe, the dean of libraries at Kansas.

This is definitely an initiative for all open access advocates to keep an eye on, and I look forward to hearing more about the group’s efforts.

ACRL Scholarly Communication 101 Road Show

CUNY will host the ACRL Scholarly Communication 101 Road Show on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Brooklyn College. As part of this event, two expert presenters will offer a presentation and workshop entitled “Scholarly Communication 101: Starting with the Basics,” which will focus on new methods of scholarly publishing and communication; copyright and intellectual property; economics; and open access. The program is targeted toward librarians and library staff who require a foundational understanding of these issues, including subject liaisons or those with new leadership assignments related to research and scholarly inquiry.

The two speakers for the workshop will be:

• Lee VanOrsdel, Dean of University Libraries, Grand Valley State University
• Joy Kirchner, Librarian, Collections, Licensing & Digital Scholarship, University of British Columbia Library

Following the ACRL workshop, afternoon break-out sessions will expand on issues raised by the presenters as well as related topics.
